Lefkada is a red variety, brought to the island in the Byzantine era, mostly found in the Paphos area (Stroumbi, Polemi) and in the wine villages of Malia and Omodos. If one were to apply strictly the term “indigenous” then this grape would fail to be included among the native varieties. The Lefkada grapes, when adequately matured, produce wines that are quite astringent, with intense colour and a distinctive, fairly strong aroma.
It produces small bunches of thick-skinned grapes, with resulting wines of a deep colour and excellent structure.
Cypriot wine producers are experimenting with Lefkada, both bush-trained and trellised, and are in the process of determining its optimum terroir. At lower, warmer climes, it tends to produce too much alcohol and loses its balance of red berries, cherries and its savoury character, whilst at cooler, higher altitudes, Lefkada struggles to ripen fully.
