LEFKADA ISLAND
  • Especially, wine which is produced from a rare variety of “berjami” or barzamino, (which was probably brought from Venetians in 1684) and cultivated in the Municipality of Sfakiotes, Karya, Apollon and Ellomenos of 200 m to 700 m altimeter, is considered one of the best varieties of our country.
  • Other varieties of Lefkaditian wine is giomatari, black sweet, keropati, white and lagkero, soft and mild wine. The viniculture from ancient years was one of the most profitable and favorite agricultural occupations, mainly on the highlands and less on the plain side of the island. Many ancient writers were referring to the Lefkaditian wine like, Plinios, the senior (23-79 bc) and Athineos (160-250 ac) in his work “Deipnosophistae”.
In Lefkada, the Union of Agricultural Association was founded in 1915 with the name TAOL, offering exclusively products from Lefkada like red and white wines produced mainly from the grape varieties “Vardea” and “Berjami” as well as the finest virgin olive oil.
  • The fishes and the sea products of Ionian Sea are also of the finest quality.
The visitor is astonished by the local handicrafts, textiles and well known Lefkaditian needleworks of unique beauty. Karya’s needleworks, well known as “Karsaniki velonia” (stitch) are exquisite, with a special artistry compared with any other place in Greece. It is an art created exclusively from the women of Karya, which was also took its name.

You can, as well admire the knitting of dentelle usually white in different sizes, even for blankets with designs, originated from the Byzantine period.

VERTZAMI GRAPE

  • Grower: SIFLOGO WINERY

Vertzami is a thick, dark-skinned grape variety grown in various areas of Greece. It is also grown in Cyprus where it is known as Lefkas.

The latter name comes from the Ionian island of Lefkas. This is where the best known wines are made from the variety, usually in single-varietal bottlings. Vertzami may also be blended with other Greek varieties, as is commonly done in the  Peloponnese and Central Greece.

The variety is extremely high in anthocyanins, containing more of the compounds than Cabernet Sauvignon. This gives Vertzami its distinctive deep red color and may also explain its resistence to disease, in particular downy mildew.

Vertzami prefers calcareous soils at lower altitude – at higher elevations it struggles to fully ripen. Grown properly, Vertzami can display bay-leaf, cinnamon and berry aromas backed by good acidity ,and generally high alcohol. Vertzami wine is best matched with heavy or rich food and the best examples have the ability to age for many years.

It is widely accepted that Vertzami was introduced by the Venetians. They controlled the Ionian Islands from the 14th to the 18th Centuries.

Synonyms include: Lefkas, Vertsami, Bertzami, Matzavi, Martzavi, Varzami Marzemina, Balsamina Nera, Lefkada, Lefkaditiko.

Food matches for Vertzami include:

  • Veal stew with onions (stifatho)
  • Five-spice braised bison
  • Confit duck with sweet potato mash

Σανταμεριάνα

The santameriana grape is a traditional variety grown in the village of Santameri (a few dozen kilometers from Patras, in Achaia). The village, with only a few hundred inhabitants, is at about 600 meter above sea level and its economy is linked to olive and cereal growing and pastoralism. Santameri, however, has also an important wine production history which dates back to ancient times. The name of the village, which also gives the name to the grape variety once grown on these hills, dates back to the 8th century, when a nobleman of French origins, Nicholas de Saint-Omer, after the 4th crusade and now the Lord of Thebes, built a castle here.
The vineyards of Santameri were hit by the phyloxera in the first half of the 20th century, when most native Greek vine varieties were destroyed, with the exception of those grown on the islands. Starting from the ’60s, the depopulation of the countryside struck the last blow on this historical vine variety. The vineyards were removed to leave room to other crops and those who kept producing grapes replaced it with other varieties, including mavrodaphne, and especially roditis. Only a few scattered stumps of santameriana were left in the countryside, amidst other vines.
Santameriana is a white grape vine; the grapes are round and have a thin skin. The color ranges from green to straw and golden yellow, when ripe. The bunches are medium-sized.

The aroma is intense and fruity: it smells of peach, pear, honey and white flowers. The grapes are harvested around mid-September.

Only one vine grower is still preserving the variety. Panos Dimitropoulos has recovered a few vines that have survived thanks to his father, who had kept them at the edges of his plots. Ten years ago, he managed to reproduce the vine shoots, which he planted on a 1.5 hectare plot. His biodynamic winery – Sant’Or – sells a monovarietal white wine made exclusively with santameriana, thus rescuing an element of the local biodiversity that had almost disappeared. Other very small local producers mix santamaneriana with other varieties to enhance the taste of the wines that they mostly produce for self-consumption.
